I just got back from Germany. I start my new job on Monday, pending the snow doesn’t make it impossible. I was in Hamburg visiting my friend, Chris. We took a short trip from Hamburg to Berlin. It was quite a trip to Germany. I got my wallet stolen and then recovered (with cash and cards) by the police, we were ditched by our ride back to Hamburg from Berlin, and a 45 minute flight delay because of a little snow in Hamburg caused me to stay an extra night in London. Overall though, it was a ton of fun.

I’ve been shooting with the 1D Mark IV for a little under a month now and I have to say that I really like it. It’s a huge improvement overa all cameras that I’ve owned. My biggest gripe is that I’m unhappy with the ISO performance as I was expecting a performance boost over the 5D Mark II that I loved and instead experienced a downgrade. I have noticed that the files are considerably noisier than the 5D – where I wouldn’t hesitate to go up to 3200, I now think twice about going to 1600 on the 1D.

See the gallery here.

I’ve been back from Kenya for about two weeks and I’ve finished my photos just in time for my trip to Germany this week.
I’ve really been working on my editing technique which you can see in the photos. We had a lot of fun in Kenya; saw lots of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, baboons, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and more. I flew into Nairobi and visited four parks while there; Sweetwaters, Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli National Park.

In total, I shot 5,366 photos, 70 videos, totaling 143GB.

All photos are available to see in this gallery.
The photos are geotagged and you can see them on a map by clicking on the “Map This” link above each photo or view all of them here.
New Feature: you can now order prints of the photos right from within the gallery!

I also shot some video directly on my still camera. The Canon 5D Mark II captures really excellent video and, although none of it is production quality because I didn’t have the right supports and wasn’t there to capture video, it’s very interesting to watch nonetheless.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately; things will be slower over the summer. I’ve been back from school for about a month now, though I’ve gone back and forth a few times since. I’ve been traveling a bit and working a lot. Trying to fly-fish as much as possible. Just came back from Ocean City, MD with a couple of friends from school. I made this photo of my friend, Erin, in our condo as we were heading out the door. I really liked the white background and the big light coming in from the sliding glass doors.

(Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 135mm, 1/160, f/2.8, ISO 800)

This kid was having a blast on the boardwalk with his toy gun. His younger brother had a toy sword, which they were fighting with.

(Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 135mm, 1/500, f/4, ISO 100)

We stopped to walk around and have dinner at the Inner Harbor on the way back.

(Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 17mm, 1/3200, f/4, ISO 400)

Traffic has been pretty bad on the way to work, lately. Yesterday (left), it took me over twice as long as normal to get into work and today (right) wasn’t much better and I left 30 minutes earlier. In case you’re wondering, I have to travel south on 695 and the blue dot indicates my location in each of these screenshots from my cellphone.

I have some cool photos coming soon. Last Friday, I went up on top of a building overlooking the Baltimore Inner Harbor with my dad (he owns a window cleaning business) at 5:30am to take some high-up photos of the city in the great early-morning light. It was pretty fun overall, but we just missed sunrise and I left my tripod at the door at home.

I did a similar shoot last year which produced this image. The buildings that I’m shooting from this year are on the other side of the harbor so should get a better view of all of downtown Baltimore. Click on the image to see the full 36 megapixel panorama.

I’m going to another building this Friday which supposedly has an even better view, and we’re going earlier to catch the sunrise. Be on the lookout for some stunning photos.

The house we were staying at had some kayaks which we used every day. One day, Chris and I took one about 4 miles out to a ghost island, Indian Key. It was an old island once inhabited by Spanish Treasure hunters and Indians but now deserted.

Had a fun photo shoot on the beach with Chris’ girlfriend, Tessa.

(Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 50mm, 1/200, f/11, ISO 100)

We drove to Key West and rented a boat for half of the day. It was really nice; the weather was warm and it was fun to swim in the ocean along the boat.

I carried a GPS receiver with me throughout the trip which logged everywhere we went (usually, depending on if it could get reception).

Similar to my European trip this summer, I combined the photos and GPS data into a Google Maps application. This time, it is enhanced with photos, GPS, my trip journal, and a new interface. Sorry, no Internet Explorer – it just doesn’t work in that browser.

I got back from Europe about a month ago…it’s been a long time coming with the photos but I’m finally done. Below the jump are some photos and the full album from the trip is at http://picasaweb.google.com/maxwellk/EuropeanDelivery.

We started in Munich, went east to Freiburg, to visit Chris and Berni at the university there, then went down through eastern Switzerland and also hit up Austria and Italy. Then we got news that we could visit Chateau Miraval, the Chateau that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are renting out and going to buy for $70M, if we could make it down to the south of France by the next morning. We drove through the night, got a few hours of sleep, and visited the next day. Did wine tasting and also got a tour of the studio there that such albums as Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Rammstein’s Mutter were recorded. Got to listen to the albums in the same space they were originally recorded! Then we headed down to Cannes and Nice and spend two days there, each. On the last day, we took 3 hours before we had to turn the car in and drove the Col de Turini. Amazing road, wish that we had spent more time on it!

I carried a small GPS receiver with me which recorded the route. I’ve downloaded the trip files and wrote a little web app to see the route that we took. Check it out here – http://www.maxwellkruger.com/europeandelivery/. If you turn on high detail, you can actually zoom in and see to the foot exactly where we were at most stages of the trip. If it’s running too slow for you, try to turn down the detail. Also, this means that most of the photos are geotagged so if you open them up in PicasaWeb, they will show a little map in the bottom right hand corner. You can also open them all up in Google Earth.
