NYC Helicopter Photos

Mar 12 2017

Recently had the opportunity to photograph New York City out of a doors-free helicopter. Freezing cold, we shot all around the city with our extremely skilled pilot, Chris, from FlyNYON. It was a great experience – will be back soon!

Take a look at the full album here!

Sample Drone Footage

Jan 3 2017

I’ve been getting back into shooting video, particularly with drones. With the latest drones, it’s relatively simple to get high quality footage. I’ve been shooting with a DJI Phantom, but just received my long-back-ordered DJI Mavic Pro that I’m super excited to get into the sky.

I put together some sample footage from my drone as I test out different settings. Have a few projects in the hopper I’m shooting – stay tuned!

I recently edited together some footage from last year’s ski season. Enjoy!

The Bald Eagles Return!

Dec 5 2016

It’s been a few years since I last photographed the eagles at Conowingo Dam, but I hauled all my gear back to Maryland this Thanksgiving in order to take a few photos of them. For those unfamiliar, Conowingo Dam has become an annual visiting spot for dozens (sometimes hundreds) of bald eagles. Over the years, they’ve learned to fish on the easy prey of fish who get caught in the dam’s turbines and come out the other side disoriented. What results is quite a spectacle – dozens of times a day, eagles swoop down from above to precisely grab the fish.

It has become a classic visiting spot for birdwatchers, fishermen, and photographers; during this time of year, there are always dozens of photographers sporting supertelephoto lenses lined up on the bank waiting to capture the story unfold.

Below are some of my favorite images. I’ve posted the full gallery and more in the album here.

Something that’s even more rare: a fight between a great blue heron and an immature bald eagle. Not sure what they were getting on about but it was pretty cool.

In the off time between eagles, the local cormorant population is also fun to watch fish. These birds can dive below water for many minutes and usually come up with a fish!

2016 Chicago Air and Water Show

Aug 28 2016

Last weekend was the Chicago Air and Water show. It was my first time seeing this particular show in person and I was not let down.  Always great to see fighter jets buzzing over your head.

(Canon EOS 6D, 200 mm, 1/1250, f/5, ISO 200)

The show started with some aerial acrobatics over the water. I was amazed at how in control, but out of control these guys were

A Navy F/A-18 flew over for a bit. Pretty awesome to see this thing fly straight up.

Army and Navy jumpers began hopping out of a C-130.

Then the show closed with the Air Force Thunderbirds. Definitely the highlight of the show.

Japan Again

Jul 6 2016

I stopped over again in Tokyo for the weekend. This time, I had a better idea of what spots I wanted to visit and was able to cram more activities in for the short weekend.
