After several years of a custom Flash-based portfolio I wrote, I decided it was time for an update. Out with old technologies, in with a new HTML5 site. The site is based on an HTML5 image viewer, which means it’s mobile-capable, which always bothered me about my old site. It also integrates with Lightroom, so updating it with new images is completely painless. Take it for a spin!

This past weekend I went camping. Usually when I go camping, it’s far enough away from a big city that light polution is minimal. I like to bring my camera on these occasions to get some sort of star photo; whether it’s an image of the Milky Way or a star trail photo. This time, I tried for a star trail photo. I set the camera on an intervalometer to capture 29 second exposures repeatedly. The camera ran for 3 hours (346 images) before the battery died. I then combined the photos into a single image you see below that demonstrates the rotation of the earth in relation to the stars. Apparently we were right above an airport approach path, which you can see the many plane streaks across the center of the image. To see a higher resolution version or purchase prints, please click here.

I’ve been collaborating with my longtime friend, Matt, on some art for his new CD. We had fun with different wardrobes and scenes as we tried to find a variety of images he could use on the album and in different marketing scenarios. Below are some of my favorite images. All were lit with a single Paul C. Buff White Lightning X1600 and large Octabox. We’ve been using the Vagabond Mini power source, which has been awesome in the field.

A few weeks ago, I learned that Conowingo Dam in Maryland is home to dozens of bald eagles from October-December every year. Not being very experienced in bird photography, I decided to see what I could capture. Unfortunately, I missed the peak of the season and there weren’t too many eagles left during my visit. I’ll be sure to visit the dam more than a few times next year!

Eagles fight over a fish. It was awesome watching them tumble in the sky fighting for fish they had caught. I was disappointed I didn’t see any mid-air fights close enough to photograph.

After catching a fish, they would often fly right over me and land on a nearby tree to eat.

As usual for the last several years, I covered the Preakness Stakes this past weekend. Preakness is one of the more difficult assignments I cover as it requires a lot of pre-planning, multiple camera positions, and running around. It’s an extremely long day that if everything comes together can pay off with great images and a lot of published images. This year was no different – I ended up making the front page of Yahoo Sports and Fox Sports and was also published on the first and second pages of USA Today’s sports section (in print). Click the link below to read on for some of my images from the weekend.

(Canon EOS 40D, 16 mm, 1/3200, f/5, ISO 640)

This year was no different for hats and there were many out and about.

(Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, 200 mm, 1/1250, f/2.8, ISO 200)

A B2 bomber flew over right before the race. It was practically silent and you could barely see it until it got really close. It looked like just a line in the sky. What an awesome piece of American engineering.

(Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, 70 mm, 1/4000, f/2.8, ISO 200)

(Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, 200 mm, 1/1600, f/2.8, ISO 200)

Maroon 5 performed in the middle of the day. I was covering another infield event with only one telephoto lens as I’d left my other cameras in the press box. I was so upset that I didn’t have a wide angle lens or a fisheye when Adam Levine got within 2 inches of me.

(Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, 70 mm, 1/1250, f/2.8, ISO 640)

Whiz Khalifa came onto the stage to perform with Maroon 5.

(Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, 88 mm, 1/1000, f/2.8, ISO 640)

(Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, 70 mm, 1/800, f/2.8, ISO 640)

And now for the actual racing photos…

(Canon EOS-1D Mark II, 400 mm, 1/6400, f/2.8, ISO 800)

This is one of my favorite angles. This is shot with a remote camera under the inside rail of the track. Tiger Walk during the first pass of the horses.

Today was the last time Space Shuttle Discovery will fly. As a sendoff to Discovery and the Shuttle program, the Shuttle was loaded onto its carrier 747 jet and made the final trip from Kennedy Space Center to its final resting place at the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (National Air and Space Museum Annex). The shuttle made several low passes over the DC metro area, where viewers could watch it in the air for the last time.

As soon as I heard about the plans for this last week, I immediately arranged access to the roof of a building in the area. My father, who owns a window cleaning company, was able to coordinate getting me on top of a building in Crystal City. Turns out the building had an awesome view of DC and I was able to get some great photos.

(Canon EOS-1D Mark II, 35 mm, 1/8000, f/3.2, ISO 400)

This weekend was the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix in Baltimore City. When I first heard there was going to be a race through the city, I couldn’t be more thrilled as I’m a huge car enthusiast. I’d planned to attend for the past year and I was fortunate enough to get credentials to photograph it. My credentials gave me great access trackside and I was able to get extremely close to the cars flying by (sometimes literally) at over 160mph.

The racing occurred throughout Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On Friday, my plane from Vegas (for work) landed around 3:30am and I had to be downtown at 6:30 for a photographers meeting…that was a rough day. I spent it mostly walking around to gain familiarity with the track.

Saturday was the American Le Mans race, which I photographed mostly from the east side of the track.

Sunday was the IndyCar race. I planned to spend most of the time on the west half of the track, but also wanted to see if I could get to a high vantage point. I looked for the tallest building I could find over the track and knocked on the front door. The concierge let me in and said she would call her boss to see if I could shoot from the roof. She hung up the phone and said “he’ll call back in 10 minutes” – not the most promising response. A few minutes later a man came out of a back door, shook my hand, and said “come on up.” We took the service elevator to the top of the building and exited onto a terrace. The view was awesome and overlooked the whole track. I was able to shoot wides of Baltimore and really tight stuff of the track. The guys on the roof could not have been more helpful and accommodating. I ended up spending over half the IRL race shooting from the roof because there were so many cool possibilities.

Below is a mix of American Le Mans Series and IndyCar Series race photos. A big thanks to Nikon Professional Services for lending me a 600mm lens and a D3S – lighter and longer than my Canon 400! Also thanks to the guys for letting me up on their building – some of my better images couldn’t have been done without their help.

I saw the sun setting and it produced a gorgeous glow off the pavement. I was challenged to find a spot to shoot from where I could get cars coming at me with the sun in the background. Took me over 45 minutes to walk to this location but the photos were worth it.

I talked to this DHS officer for a while. He was there in case of any bomb incidents but brought his radar gun and was having a blast clocking the cars down the straights. The particular straight we were at had cars going 142mph. During a yellow they were going 120.
(Canon EOS-1D Mark II, 32 mm, 1/5000, f/2.8, ISO 400)

At the end of the race, I was shooting by the turn near the pits. I wanted to shoot down the straight so I kept walking down to the runoff area where the safety truck sat ready until there was an incident. Not 30 seconds after leaving the turn, a yellow came out and the safety truck left. I saw it stop immediately after pulling out and figured there was a crash. I rushed back to the turn where I discovered that JR Hildebrand crashed his car into the wall RIGHT where I was standing. Don’t know if I’m lucky or unlucky that I wasn’t there photographing.
